Stora Enso ordered to pay 800,000 euros in dismissal dispute

In a groundbreaking ruling, the Labor Court has mandated that Stora Enso pay nearly 800,000 euros in compensation for the dismissal of trusted employees at the Veitsiluoto factory. The decision asserts that the company violated the collective agreement by terminating these employees’ contracts. The dispute centered around the termination of departmental trusted employees.

Violation of Employment Rights

The Labor Court found that Stora Enso could have reassigned the eight dismissed trusted employees to other remaining positions as an alternative to dismissal. By failing to do so, the court deemed that the company breached the collective agreement. According to the Labor Court, the departmental trusted employees had a higher right to suitable roles than regular employees. By terminating all trusted employees at the factory, the company violated its obligation to offer work and training.

Expert Opinion on Legal Precedent

”This is the third ruling by the Labor Court in a few years concerning the forest industry. In all cases, it has been determined that the dismissal protection of trusted employees was violated,” stated Juha Koivisto, a legal expert from Paperiliitto. ”Considering the changes in local bargaining laws, it is hoped that this ruling marks the end of disputes related to the dismissal of trusted employees.”

Financial Repercussions

In addition to the compensation, Stora Enso was ordered to cover its legal costs of approximately 110,000 euros and pay Paperiliitto 15,000 euros in legal fees. This ruling sets a significant precedent in the realm of labor disputes within the forest industry.

As we navigate through the complexities of labor laws and corporate responsibilities, it’s essential to remember that behind every legal battle are individuals with families and livelihoods at stake. The court’s decision not only reflects a breach of contract but also impacts the lives of those directly affected by these dismissals. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding fair treatment and employment rights for all workers, ensuring a more equitable and just workplace for everyone involved.
